Im sure Broadway buff HATE when musicals become movies because they think "it ruins them",the same way fans of indie bands hate when they get famous (NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE.lol)
But I really don't see how this movie could have ruined RENT at all.I think this movie did the musical justice. Each song is beautiful, edgy and fun and very sing-a-longable.
But what I love the most about RENT is the justice and light it brings to those who have an "alternative lifestyle."
Gay,straight,HIV positive, transexual, stripper, drug abuser, interacial relationships. As controversial as these lifestyles seem to many, this movie showed that no matter the way you choose to live, everyone loves, hurts, laughs, and cries and thats what keeps us all the same.
This movie really is the definition of love and friendship.
I just hope one day this musical can be excepted for what it is and not seen as some kind of taboo musical cause it truely is breathtaking and moving.

I loved the film! It's real sad they're taking it off broadway forever :[
All their voices and acting were amazing, i think it's probably one of the best ever musical/film adaptations ever!

I love when they make musicals into movies. Sometimes they're not the same, but when they are, they're great. I don't have the money or time to go see a show on Broadway, so they're a nice alternative.
Rent is probably my favorite musical, for the great music and all the reasons you pointed out. It's got such a strong message, and I love it.

I agree. there's so much more meaning and depth to this musical then what most people see it as. most of the songs are really powerful if you actually listen to the lyrics.
aside from that, it really is a fun musical too. I can seriously listen the soundtrack on repeat. I wish I saw the broadway show but unfortunately I'm from the other side of the world haha. good thing there was a movie adaptation

i am very open minded and i love all types of movies, documentaries, chick flicks, musicals, horror, comedy, etc... but i hated this movie. it probably didn't help that i saw it with a girl that cries hysterically any time someone even brings up the subject of aids, which by the way, annoyed me because she wasn't even affected by the disease in any way in her life. for some reason she would just start crying like a child and then she got all pissed at me cause i didn't like the movie. i just didn't find how they dealt with the subject matter very moving, interesting, or entertaining and the songs were boring and generic. it's not that i'm insensitive to the subject altogether, i just think the movie dealt with it poorly.

I love this musical. The music is absolutely beautiful and everything is so well executed. It also hit home because I could easily relate to many of the themes and issues it touched upon. I think I had the Soundtrack on replay for a couple weeks haha.

I loved the film adaptation of this show. I never had the chance to see it on Broadway, so seeing it on the big screen was really my only option, and I'm really glad they were able to bring back most of the original cast. I think that's really what made the film so great. I mean, Idina Menzel? C'mon, she's amazing. I don't even remember how many times I saw it in theaters, but it was a ridiculous number of times.
